Rebecca Zehr's A Sound of My Own is a film about legacy and about transcending what a parent has passed on to us. It’s a film about music and about Marja, who has taken over her father's position in Embryo, a band that oscillates between krautrock and free jazz. The band becomes her family, and she becomes its bandleader. Through a mix of archival footage and psychedelic animation, the filmmaker gambles on making us feel the music. We’re presenting A Sound of My Own because the filmmaker has created a film about music itself and the daily life of a woman pursuing a project in a male-dominated environment. It’s a close-up on a female musician in full control of her own destiny who doesn’t doubt her place. (Bibi Club)
This free (by reservation) screening was programmed by the band Bibi Club as part of the section Carte blanche.
Following a screening, the duo Bibi Club will give a hybrid performance, part concert and part DJ set, inspired by the film's music and fueled by their own compositions.
Bibi Club is the musical project of vocalist and keyboardist Adèle Trottier-Rivard and guitarist Nicolas Basque. They explore the sensitive spectrum between here and there, pointing to love, nature, and community as the only true purpose in life.
