After being forced to return to Taiwan from Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic, Johan Chang set about making a Super 8 film, frame by frame, despite the material and logistical restrictions she faced. Unable to obtain any equipment on the island, she orders it from Japan. What follows is a movement that spans the different phases of production, from shooting to the final result. These stages resist linearity, coexisting in no particular order and exposing the fundamentally artisanal and process-based nature of Chang's work. A travelogue of sorts, Flight and Frame documents with humour and delicacy the challenges of creating on film. (MF)
