During a sensory journey to the heart of Iberian flora, Mauricio Freyre examines plant seeds as yet another manifestation of colonial violence and neglect. Whether it be the uncatalogued archives of Madrid's botanical garden or the industrial cultivation of Japanese mandarins on Peruvian soil by an international conglomerate for mass export, this film essay reveals the many ways in which a land can be deprived of its fruit, both literally and poetically. The type of film used, which results in a warm, inviting image, is reminiscent of the film's physical object, a catalogue of history in itself. Thus, this document(ary) raises as many questions as it answers about the gaps in archiving, which have been made with prejudice by those who have attempted to write history by pigeonholing it. (OM)
