A psychotherapist, played by Charlotte Rampling, archives testimonies recorded on cassette. Inspired by narratives based on fragments of real life, and rendered anonymous by this process of fictionalization, these testimonials tell stories of psychosis. The filmmaker does not seek to illustrate them, but rather creates symbolic, even metaphorical, imagery shot on 16mm black-and-white film developed by hand. Thus, leaving the therapist's office to sail across an icy sea, the visual design alternates between the tranquility of calm waters and the turmoil caused by bad weather, until the horizon is lost. Enhanced by the haunting soundtrack of British musician and experimental composer Fred Frith, this film avoids stereotypes to evoke a profound journey into the human mind.(HSB)
