Georgina Epiayu, a transgender woman and elder of the Colombian Wayúu community, crosses the arid, picturesque desert of La Guajira to reconnect with her family, regain her dignity, and assert her fundamental right to fully exist in the eyes of society and the country. Between a Kafkaesque bureaucracy wandering and an internal quest, her journey unveils not only deeply rooted solitude and painful memories, but also unending resilience. Filmmaker Mónica Taboada Tapia paints a portrait of rare accuracy, forgoing the spectacular in favour of slow steps, listening, silence, and the patience of her protagonist. The Soul of the Desert uses cinematography that encapsulates the political and the personal, making the struggle of those facing the threat of being forgotten visible by proudly affirming their place in this world.
