With Hasan in Gaza is a haunting testament to memory, survival, and the cyclical violence in Gaza. MiniDV footage from 2001, rediscovered and edited together, follows Kamal Aljafari and his guide Hasan Elboubou through the Gaza Strip in search of a friend from Kamal Aljafari’s time in prison. The filmmaker’s camera lingers on markets, homes, streets, and quiet beaches where children play, capturing moments of daily life that are tender, fleeting, and agonizing. These raw and intimate images attest to the fragile rhythms of existence under the ever-present shadow of occupation. Viewed today, these scenes resonate with devastating clarity, linking past violence to the terrifying genocidal present and revealing a reality where the ordinary and the catastrophic coexist. Kamal Aljafari’s lens bears witness, transforming lost moments into an urgent testimony, a historical record, and an intimate act of resistance. (ME)
